By Rebecca Murray, About.com

(Apr. 6, 2005) Michael Bay is gearing up to take on "Transformers." Bay, who just completed work on "The Island" starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson, is interested in directing the live-action "Transformers" movie for DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount.

Steven Spielberg is executive producing "The Transformers, with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in charge of the screenplay. Kurtzman and Orci wrote the script to "The Island" and according to Variety, the two were instrumental in getting Bay to consider directing "The Transformers."

In a press release dated July 2004, DreamWorks Head of Production Adam Goodman stated, "Steven and everyone at DreamWorks are very excited about the prospect of expanding the world of Transformers into the live-action feature film arena. The possibilities for a thrilling action adventure are virtually endless, and a film holds the definite promise of expanding an already worldwide fan base to new audiences."

If Bay signs on, then production is expected to begin this fall, with a release set for 2007.
