Oct 17, 2004 - After much speculation and what seems like years of anticipation, Warner Bros Pictures announced feature film newcomer Brandon Routh, a 25-year-old native of Iowa with television and film acting experience, will fill in the role of The Man of Steel in the upcoming "Superman" action-adventure epic. Director Bryan Singer's onboard and will be helming the "Superman Returns" film instead of "X-Men 3."

According to the studio, Routh was selected after an exhaustive worldwide search in which thousands of potential "Superman" stars were interviewed. Warner Bros Pictures expects filming to begin in Australia in early 2005, with a summer 2006 release date penciled in.

Bryan Singer stated in a press release announcing Routh's casting: "Contrary to speculation, it was always my absolute intention to hire an unknown for this role. Brandon is an extremely fine actor who possesses the physical qualifications of Clark Kent/Superman. But he also embodies the legacy and history of this character in a way that makes me certain he's the right choice."

The untitled "Superman" movie will be produced Jon Peters, Bryan Singer and Gilbert Adler. Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris wrote the screenplay.

In a press release issued by Warner Bros Pictures, Jeff Robinov, President of Production for Warner Bros Pictures said, "We respect and appreciate the intense interest that our fans around the world have in 'Superman,' and we went everywhere in search of a talented actor who would represent his look, character and presence. We think Brandon is a gifted young performer who can re-energize this iconic character and excite new audiences about the legend of Superman."

Routh's television credits include "One Life to Live," "Gilmore Girls," "Will & Grace" and "Cold Case."
