Back in December 2004 Chris Columbus was attached to both produce and direct a big screen adaptation of Marvel Comics' Sub-Mariner. But now it looks as though Universal Pictures has made a deal with Terminator 3 director Jonathan Mostow to write and direct the Sub-Mariner feature film.

The Sub-Mariner/Prince Namor is a half-man/half-amphibian who hails from Atlantis and is caught between two identities. As a superhero, he fights to help humans but he's also battled humans who've polluted the ocean. In the film adaptation, he's a major player in an impending war between the underwater world and those who live on land.

Kevin Feige, the man responsible for overseeing the film for Marvel, told The Hollywood Reporter, "We want to show our first hero, and still most unique hero, in a world that the audience has never seen before. But that spectacle will be tempered with character. Our hero is caught between two worlds. That is the heart of the story, and it is that dichotomy that makes him so interesting."

There's no word yet on casting or when the film will go into production.
