Universal Pictures has named Chris Columbus as director for their "Sub-Mariner" superhero movie, based on the Marvel Comics character.

Columbus will direct and produce "Sub-Mariner" along with Marvel Studios' Avi Arad and Kevin Misher/Misher Films. David Self ("Road to Perdition") wrote the script, which Columbus will direct when he's finished with "Rent."

Avi Arad told The Hollywood Reporter, "This is a giant project. Chris and I have been talking about this for six years, and once he saw where we were going with it and the world we were going to create, he jumped in."

The Sub-Mariner/Prince Namor, is half-man/half-amphibian who hails from Atlantis and is caught between two identities. As a superhero, he fights to help humans but he's also battled humans who have polluted the ocean.
