THINKFilm Falls for "Strangers with Candy"

Comedy Central's Hit Show Moves to the Big Screen

By , About.com Guide

Feb 6, 2006 - THINKFilm hopes audiences are ready for a laugh. The studio has picked up the worldwide rights to the movie "Strangers with Candy," the big screen version of the hit Comedy Central series.

Small screen "Strangers with Candy" stars Amy Sedaris, Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello make the transition to the feature film, with Dinello also directing the film. The cast also includes Greg Hollimon, Deborah Rush, Dan Hedaya, Alison Janney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kristen Johnston, Justin Theroux, Matthew Broderick, Sarah Jessica Parker and Sir Ian Holm.

Colbert serves double duty on the project as both one of the stars and a co-producer. Lorena David and Mark A. Roberts also produced "Strangers with Candy" along with David Letterman's production company, Worldwide Pants Incorporated.

Proving that studio executives do have a sense of humor, THINKFilm included the following quote from its Head of US Theatrical Mark Urman in the press release announcing the acquisition:

"At this important stage of our company's development, we were looking for a film that combined all of the best qualities of 'Crash,' 'Brokeback Mountain,' and "Capote.' 'Strangers with Candy' has ethnic slurs, clandestine gay sex, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. What more could we want?!"

Rob Burnett, President and CEO of Worldwide Pants, added, "At this important stage of our company's development we were looking for a distributor that could give a really funny quote in a press release."

"Strangers with Candy" - The Official Synopsis

Amy Sedaris stars as Jerri Blank, a 46 year-old ex-junkie, ex-con who decides to get a fresh start in life and regain the trust of her family, by returning to high school. Little does she know that the cool kids in her middle class suburb are far more dangerous then anyone she ever encountered in prison. Colbert and Dinello portray the science teacher and art teacher respectively (who happen to be enamored of one another).

THINKFilm hopes to release "Strangers with Candy" this summer.
