April 21, 2006 - The man behind Alias and Lost - and the director of the upcoming Tom Cruise movie, Mission Impossible 3 - is taking on the Star Trek film franchise.

Abrams is set to direct the 11th Star Trek movie, which Paramount Pictures expects to release in 2008. Abrams will also write the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. And as if he's not busy enough, he'll also produce the Star Trek film with Damon Lindelof and Bryan Burk.

The plot for the 11th Star Trek film sounds as though it'll be an origin story of sorts. According to Variety, the 11th film will take place back when James T Kirk and Mr Spock first met at the Starfleet Academy.
