Variety is reporting Ron Howard, the director of the upcoming Russell Crowe movie, "Cinderella Man," will take the helm of "The Serpent and the Eagle" for Paramount Pictures.

According to Variety, "The Serpent and the Eagle" is an epic drama which focuses on the Spanish conquest of Mexico in 1520. Brian Helgeland ("Man on Fire") is rewriting the script and Brian Grazer, Howard's Imagine partner, will produce the film.

Howard is currently in production on "The Da Vinci Code" with Tom Hanks and Audrey Tautou. There's no word yet on when Howard is expected to begin work on "The Serpent and the Eagle."
