It's official - Rose McGowan will star in Red Sonja. Presented by Robert Rodriguez but directed by Douglas Aarniokoski, Red Sonja is set to begin filming in October 2008. David White wrote the screenplay based on the character created by Robert E Howard (Roy Thomas adapted it for Marvel Comics).
Nu Image/Millennium Films made the announcement, putting an end to months of rumors circulating about the project. Rodriguez (currently dating McGowan) is aboard as a producer along with Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta and George Furla. Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short, Luke Lieberman and Nick Barrucci are executive producing.
In a press release announcing the casting Lerner said, "This is an amazing property and film for our company. Working with the talented Robert Rodriguez, having Rose McGowan as Red Sonja and Douglas Aarniokoski directing is a fantastic combination. We could not be happier."
Davidson said, "It is our intent to take this opportunity to build on the worlds of branded entertainment with Red Sonja as well as Conan, Hercules and The Three Musketeers titles. There is history with these mythical heroes, and success."
This will not be the first time the red-haired comic book vixen has made an appearance on the big screen. Brigitte Nielsen played the role in 1985's Red Sonja which featured now-California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as Kalidor.
