Miramax Films Acquires "The Queen"

From Director Stephen Frears Comes a Tale All About the Royal Family

Oct 10, 2005 - Miramax Films has acquired director Stephen Frears' "The Queen" starring Helen Mirren, Michael Sheen, and James Cromwell.

"The Queen" is described as a revealing glimpse into the lives of the British royal family following the untimely death of Princess Diana. Mirren stars as Queen Elizabeth II, Cromwell plays Prince Philip and Sheen co-stars as British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Oscar nominated Frears ("The Grifters") directed the film from a script by Peter Morgan. Andy Harries, Christine Langan and Tracey Seaward produced "The Queen," with Francois Ivernel, Cameron McCracken and Scott Rudin executive producing.

Miramax Films President Daniel Battsek said in a press release announcing the acquisition, "Acquiring 'The Queen' is part of our continued strategy to bring exciting filmmakers and quality films to the Miramax label. I am thrilled to continue a long-standing relationship with Stephen Frears, who always brings his unique vision to a project, and this particular story is one that has fascinated the world."
