May 4, 2010 - Nearly 30 years after The Dark Crystal enchanted audiences, The Jim Henson Company and Omnilab Media are finally preparing to start production on the much-anticipated sequel, Power of the Dark Crystal. The sequel will be a 3-D, live-action film with puppetry and CGI elements, and, according to Omnilab and Jim Henson Company, it will be one of the biggest films ever produced in Australia.

The directing team behind Undead and Daybreakers, Peter and Michael Spierig, have been tapped to direct Power of the Dark Crystal. Craig Pearce (Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge) wrote the screenplay, and The Dark Crystal's conceptual designer, Brian Froud, will be handling the same job on the sequel.

"Peter Spierig and Michael Spierig are sure to create a film that will continue the legacy of the original and exceed the expectations of our loyal fans," stated Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company in the press release announcing the sequel.

Michael Spierig was quotes as saying, "We feel a tremendous amount of responsibility in telling this story with the same meticulous care that Jim Henson and Frank Oz gave the 1982 original." Peter Spierig added, "This is a chance to take the world of puppetry into the modern age by using modern techniques (like motion capture CGI) and the tried and true methods (like puppetry and animatronics) to create a one hundred percent real world that is unique to The Dark Crystal."
