The news out of the 2005 Cannes Film Festival indicates David Cronenberg will write and direct the thriller "Painkillers" as his follow up to the dramatic movie, "A History of Violence."

"Painkillers" will reunite Cronenberg with producer Robert Lantos. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Painkillers" is set in a world gone mad. Pain is a forbidden pleasure and sex has been replaced by surgeries which are performed in public.

"Sometimes it's good to be afraid of what you create. And I am afraid of 'Painkillers.' I'm very afraid, and that's why I have to do it," Cronenberg told The Hollywood Reporter while in Cannes to promote his film, "A History of Violence," starring Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris.

"Painkillers" is aiming for a late 2006 release.
