Jan 19, 2006 - New Line Cinema confirmed Academy Award nominee Virginia Madsen ("Sideways") will star opposite Jim Carrey in the thriller, "The Number 23," to be directed by Joel Schumacher ("The Phantom of the Opera"). Fernley Phillips wrote the script.

According to the studio, Madsen will play Carrey's wife. Elisabeth Shue had originally been cast in the role however she had to step down after discovering she's pregnant. Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson are producing the thriller with production expected to begin later this month.

"The Number 23" is the story of a man (Carrey) who becomes increasingly convinced that a book titled "The Number 23" is the story of his life. As he reads the book, he begins to realize "The Number 23" is predicting grave consequences for his life.

In a statement released by New Line Cinema, producer Beau Flynn said, "We’ve been fans of Virginia Madsen’s work for a long time and are thrilled to have her on board. She will really add something special to this film and we are looking forward to seeing the chemistry she develops with Jim Carrey play out on the screen.”
