The original 1984 goofball comedy starred Anthony Edwards and Robert Carradine as best friends who head off to college only to find themselves ostracized because they're smart, pocket protector-wearing nerds. The idea to remake the comedy was hatched by Brody and Brett Harrison, who will be co-producing the remake with McG.
McG told Variety it was Brody's idea. "He said everyone he knew would like to see a new take on the film, and I told him that I knew every single line of the original film and the sequel," said McG, adding, "I could definitely relate to every aspect of those films and was absolutely on the nerd side."
Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah are writing the script, with Fox Searchlight backing the project. McG told Variety this updated version will be similar to the original but will probably be edgier, with an R rating not out of the question.
