Jan 13, 2007 - The musical that took London and Broadway by storm is heading to the big screen with Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep in the lead. Mamma Mia!, based on the hit musical, is expected to begin shooting this summer with feature film newcomer director Phyllida Lloyd at the helm.
Lloyd directed Mamma Mia! in London and on Broadway. Although this will be her first feature film, Lloyd will have plenty of talent behind the scenes to rely on for help. Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Abba songwriters Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus will executive produce the film, with Judy Craymer and Gary Goetzman producing.
Mamma Mia! is driven by the songs of the Swedish musical group, Abba. Abba was hugely successful in the 1970s, with hits such as SOS, Fernando, and Dancing Queen.
Catherine Johnson wrote the book for the play and adapted the screenplay which follows a bride-to-be who never met her dad and was raised by a single mother (Streep's role in the film). The bride-to-be invites three men to her wedding, one of which is more than likely her absentee father.
Streep will sing in the film. There's no word as of yet as to who will play her daughter.
