May 31, 2007 Picturehouse and HBO Films announced production is underway on the movie Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Mystery starring Abigail Breslin. Set in 1934, the story centers around Kit Kittredge, a 10-year-old Cincinnati girl.
In addition to Bresling, the Kit Kittredge cast also includes Joan Cusack, Glenne Headly, Jane Krakowski, Chris ODonnell, Julia Ormond, Wallace Shawn, Stanley Tucci, Madison Davenport, Zach Mills, Willow Smith, and Max Thieriot.
The first of the films to be adapted from the American Girl series will be directed by Patricia Rozema from a screenplay by Ann Peacock. HBO Films, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Lisa Gillan, and American Girl president Ellen L Brothers are producing with Julia Roberts executive producing.
In a press release announcing the start of production Goldsmith-Thomas said, "On behalf of Red Om Films and Goldsmith-Thomas Productions we are thrilled to continue our theatrical association with American Girl. In addition to Abigail Breslin, we've assembled a stellar cast of principal actors, as well as four new young girls we discovered in the open call auditions held around the country. It was important to us to give the enthusiastic fans of this wonderful brand an opportunity to participate in bringing this to the screen."
Picturehouse and HBO Films plan on releasing Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Mystery on July 2, 2008.
