"All the King's Men" Remake Signs on All-Star Cast

Including Meryl Streep, Sean Penn, and Jude Law

"All the King's Men" is getting the remake treatment. The original 1949 "All the King's Men" movie won three Oscars - Best Supporting Actress (Mercedes McCambridge), Best Actor (Broderick Crawford), and Best Picture - and was nominated for an additional four.

Sean Penn will take on Broderick's role of Southern politican, Willie Stark. Streep would take over McCambridge's role as Stark's assistant, Sadie Burke. Jude Law, an actor who seems to be in every project released in the last quarter of 2004, would portray Jack Burden (played by Oscar nominee John Ireland in the '49 version).

Mark Ruffalo and Kate Winslet are in talks to also join the production. According to Variety, the 2005 adaptation will remain more faithful to Penn Warren's 1946 novel than to the film version.

The screenplay was written by Steven Zaillian (writer, "Gangs of New York") who will also be directing the film. To help add an authenticity to the political drama, Democratic consultant James Carville will be joining Todd Phillips as an executive producer.
