Jimmy Hayward Takes Over 'Jonah Hex' Movie

Josh Brolin at the Hollywood premiere of 'In the Valley of Elah.'

Jan 6, 2009 - The Hollywood Reporter is reporting Horton Hears a Who! director Jimmy Hayward will be taking over as director on the comic book-inspired movie Jonah Hex. Hayward's taking on the film after Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank, Game) left the project over creative differences.

The paper also reports Josh Brolin is definitely set to play the title character. In a November 2008 interview for Milk, Brolin wasn't sure this was a movie he wanted to take on. "Don't know," was Brolin's response when asked if he was going to be starring in the Jonah Hex movie. "I have a very tough time deciding, except for Milk. I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't know. It's a very good time. It's a very good time and I don't want to slight anybody and I don't want to insult anybody, but the fact of the matter is with more decisions comes a little more pressure. For me, I just try and find that thing that really resonates. There's one thing that Tony Scott's doing that I love and that I really want to do, and trying to find the timing and all that…"

In November Brolin said his indecision over Jonah Hex wasn't just about the timing and the fact studios are gearing up for a lot of production at the beginning of 2009. "Not entirely. No, no. A little, little bit, a little bit because of more possibilities and all that, but no," admitted Brolin. "I think Jonah Hex is a really, really interesting story. I think it would be risky also, which I like, and I don't know if it's the thing to do. [Laughing] Got me all f---ed up now."

It appears that, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Brolin decided to take a chance on a comic book-inspired character. Jonah Hex is a Western comic featuring a central character who sports a Confederate army uniform and a horribly burned face. He's an expert gunslinger and bounty hunter who doesn't possess any superpowers.

The studio is hoping to get into production before the summer of 2009.
