Sep 29, 2006 When I spoke to Iron Man director Jon Favreau on September 25th, the actor/director said there would be a major announcement about the casting of the superhero film soon. While 'soon' in Hollywood-speak can be weeks, months, even years, in this case Favreau was right on target. It was announced today that Robert Downey Jr has been tapped to play the title role in the Iron Man film which will begin shooting in Los Angeles in February 2007.
In a statement issued by Marvel Studios, President of Production Kevin Feige said, "Robert Downey Jr. is one of the most talented and acclaimed actors of this generation. His versatility sets him apart and makes him an ideal fit to play such a complex character as Iron Man. We could not think of another actor better suited to bring one of Marvels crown jewels to the big screen and be the centerpiece of our first independently produced feature."
According to the press release, the supporting roles are still being cast. Terrence Howard is rumored to be interested in playing Jim Rhodes aka War Machine.
Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures plan to release Iron Man in theaters on May 2, 2008.
