By , About.com Guide

June 26, 2006 - The question of who will play the lead role in Iron Man is still unanswered, but at least now fans of the super hero can begin the countdown for the upcoming Paramount Pictures and Marvel Entertainment movie. The studios have confirmed Iron Man will kick off the summer of 2008 by hitting theaters on May 2nd.

Jon Favreau (Zathura, Elf) will direct Iron Man with Avi Arad and Kevin Feige producing. Favreau, Ari Arad and Louis D'Esposito will executive produce.

For those unfamiliar with Marvel's Iron Man comic books, the story follows Tony Stark, a billionaire weapons manufacturer who is injured by one of his own weapons. He creates a high-tech suit of armor and transforms into good guy, Iron Man.

Director Favreau has expressed his desire to cast an unknown actor in the title role.

In a statement issued by Paramount Pictures, Kevin Feige, President of Production for Marvel Studios, said, "We're thrilled to be launching the summer 2008 movie season with Iron Man. Marvel has had great success with the first Friday in May - Spider-Man broke records on that first Friday and X2 debuted at the top of the box office charts as well. We're looking forward to extending that track record with Iron Man and are extremely pleased with the progress of the script, the production team we are forming and the initial production designs."
