Following the untimely death of celebrity Anna Nicole Smith, MTI Home Video issued a press release confirming her film, Illegal Aliens, will hit stores in May. Edgewood Studios and MTI Home Video intended to include Anna Nicole Smith in a publicity campaign as the DVD release date neared, however both companies have decided to put the film out in May as planned despite Smith's death.
Interest in the film immediately following Smith's unfortunate death forced MTI Home Video to clear up rumors surrounding the project. Smith was actively involved in all aspects of the film, not only starring in Illegal Aliens but also serving as a producer. Her now-deceased son Daniel worked as an associate producer and prior to Anna Nicole Smith's passing, the production companies and Smith had planned on dedicating the film to Daniel's memory.
In a statement issued by MTI Home Video, executive producer/actor John James said, "At first look, Illegal Aliens appears to be just another low budget sci-fi comedy poking fun at Hollywood's big budget flicks. Now with the passing of its star you'll find it to be replete with metaphors of her life. Anna invested in the production for her and her son, and was involved in creative aspects, adding numerous elements and rewrites for her character. This movie may just be the Abbey Road of films for Anna Nicole Smith fans."
Illegal Aliens was directed by David Giancola from a screenplay by Ben Coello. The film stars Smith, Joanie Laurer, Lenise Soren, Gladys Jimenez, Patrick Burleigh, Dennis Lemoine, Mark Keppel, Michael J Valentine, and Kevin McGuire.
