3-D animator Neill Blomkamp has been hired to direct Halo for Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox. Halo will mark Blomkamp's feature film directorial debut.

Alex Garland (28 Days Later) wrote the script which, if it follows the popular video game series, will focus on Master Chief and his companion Cortana as they travel the universe trying to save humanity from evil forces, including The Covenant and the parasitic Flood.

Mary Parent, Scott Stuber and Peter Schlessel are producing the film. Rumors had floated around the Internet for months indicating executive producer Peter Jackson may helm the project. According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, Jackson is directly responsible for Blomkamp being hired as director.

Jackson's award-winning Weta Digital Ltd and Weta Workshop Ltd will be providing the effects for Halo, including the creatures, miniatures and visual effects.

Halo is tentatively set for release in 2008.
