Miramax Films and Sir Elton John's Rocket Pictures have reached an agreement to jointly produce Gnomeo and Juliet. Rocket Pictures producing partners David Furnish and Steve Hamilton Shaw will work on the project with Daniel Battsek, president of Miramax.Gnomeo and Juliet has been in the works for a while and the animated film is now moving forward with Kate Winslet attached to star. The movie is based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet but will be set in the world of garden gnomes.
Tim Rice and Elton John are collaborating on the songs for Gnomeo and Juliet. In a statement issued by Miramax John said, " I am very excited about working with Miramax. Gnomeo is an edgy concept and Miramax is the perfect home to push the envelope in animation."
According to the studio's press release, Rob Sprackling and John Smith wrote the original script for Gnomeo and Juliet. Kevin Cecil and Andy Riley penned the current version.
