July 12, 2007 - Zac Efron appears to be the new go-to guy when it comes to movie musicals. After breaking through in High School Musical, Efron took on New Line's remake of the John Waters movie, Hairspray. High School Musical 2 soon followed. Now comes word that Efron will take over the role Kevin Bacon made famous in the 1984 film, Footloose.
Paramount Pictures' plans for the remake have Kenny Ortega directing and Dylan Sellers producing. Ortega directed the two High School Musical movies and has amassed quite a resume as a choreographer. Ortega was responsible for the dance moves in Xanadu, Dirty Dancing, Shag and Newsies (remember that one with a young Christian Bale singing and dancing his heart out?).
Efron's happy to be part of bringing musicals to a whole new generation of fans. At the Hairspray press junket Efron said, "It’s the best compliment when a parent can come up to you and say, ‘My son saw High School Musical and he’s starring in his school play.’ That happens. That really does happen and it’s so heartwarming to hear. I’ve also been excited because we’re educating a young audience in how great musicals are. It’s so easy to blow something up and it looks great and it looks so cool, but singing and dancing takes a little bit of thinking to wrap your mind around.”
