The Cast of "Fame" is Announced

A New Take on the 1980 Dance Film

By , About.com Guide

Oct 13, 2008 - Fame, the 1980 musical which spawned a TV series and a few forgettable fashion trends, is getting a makeover. MGM and Lakeshore Entertainment are remaking Fame with a new batch of young actors set to sing and dance their way across the big screen.

Kristy Flores plays dancer Rosie, Paul Iacono is filmmaker Neil, Paul McGill plays a gay dancer named Kevin from the Midwest, Naturi Naughton is Denise, a classical piano player, and Kay Panabaker is Jenny, a determined actor. So You Think You Can Dance's Kherington Payne takes on the role of Alice the ballerina, Collins Pennie is an artist named Malik, Walter Perez plays musician Victor, and Anna Maria Perez de Tagle is the talkative Joy Moy.

In a press release announcing the cast, producer Tom Rosenberg, chairman & CEO of Lakeshore Entertainment, said, "We have assembled a gifted group of actors, dancers and musicians who are just starting out and have a true affinity for the characters they're playing. They are going through the same competition and artistic process in real-life as they strive to make a name for themselves. The original Fame premise is still vitally compelling."

Choreographer Kevin Tancharoen will make his directorial debut with the film. Allison Burnet wrote the script; Aline Brosh McKenna did the rewrite.

Filming is expected to begin in November with MGM and Lakeshore aiming for a September 25, 2009 release.
