Universal Pictures snagged Ron Howard to direct the big screen adaptation of Claire Messud's book The Emperor's Children. Squid and the Whale writer/director Noah Baumbach adapted the novel and Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Howard will produce the film.
Messud's book tells the story of three 30ish New York friends - a writer, a documentary filmmaker and a freelance critic - who find their lives unexpectedly changed when an idealistic college dropout enters the scene.
Howard's schedule was already fairly full before he committed to directing The Emperor's Children. The Oscar-winning director (A Beautiful Mind) also has Frost/Nixon, Angels & Demons and Cache in various stages of development.
