After months of rumors, Variety is reporting Peter Berg - the man behind the upcoming Will Smith starrer Hancock as well as The Kingdom and Friday Night Lights - will be directing Dune for Paramount Pictures. There's no word yet on who will take on the gargantuan task of adapting Frank Herbert's sci-fi book.
Herbert's book was set on the planet Arrakis, the source of a spice known as Melange which is used for space travel. Herbert's work previously hit the big screen back in 1984 with David Lynch at the helm. That version was mostly panned by critics, and fans of the novel found Lynch's version wasn't faithful enough to Herbert's material.
Kevin Misher, Richard Rubenstein, and Sarah Aubrey are producing the film. Paramount is eyeing a 2010 release.
