The sequel to the 1982 hit will take place hundreds of years after "The Dark Crystal." The world has fallen into darkness and a mysterious girl made of fire joins with a Gelfling outcast to reignite the dying sun by way of a stolen shard of the legendary Crystal.
The designer of the original film, Brian Froud, is onboard the sequel. In addition, Orphanage Animation (a new studio created by Tartakovsky) will head up the CG animation elements which will be featured along with live-action animatronic characters.
In a statement issued by The Jim Henson Company, the company's co-CEO Lisa Henson said, "As an auteur of such exciting and fantastical adventure projects, Genndy is the perfect director to bring to life 'Power of the Dark Crystal.' I am sure that his visualization of Brian Froud's designs will thrill fans of the original film as well as audiences who are meeting these beloved characters for the first time."
Genndy Tartakovsky added, "The original 'Dark Crystal' was one of the most inspirational and imaginative pictures of its time, so it's a real honor for me to be able to bring the world of 'The Dark Crystal' to a whole new generation."
