By Rebecca Murray, About.com

Oct 11, 2004 - The romantic comedy, "The Darwin Awards," will begin shooting in late November, 2004 with Finn Taylor at the helm and Winona Ryder and Joseph Fiennes in starring roles. Joining Ryder and Fiennes for "The Darwin Awards" will be David Arquette, Tim Blake Nelson, and Jeffrey Tambor.

Besides being the name of the upcoming romantic comedy, The Darwin Awards are a well-known Internet award given to anyone who dies or seriously injures themself in an incredibly stupid way. DarwinAwards.com puts it this way: "The Darwin Awards honor those who improve our gene pool... by removing themselves from it. Of necessity, this honor is bestowed posthumously."

According to Variety, Joseph Fiennes will play a forensic detective who teams up with an insurance claims investigator (Winona Ryder) to profile a potential Darwin Award winner.

Steven Siebert will serve as executive producer. Jane Sindell, Johnny Wow, and Jason Blum are producing "The Darwin Awards."

Winona Ryder just completed work on the sci-fi/animated drama, "A Scanner Darkly," with Keanu Reeves. Joseph Fiennes just finished "Man to Man," a dramatic tale about anthropologists who capture pygmies to study the link between man and apes.
