The 1982 fantasy film, "The Dark Crystal," earned critical acclaim for its special effects and still has a hardcore legion of fans. Now more than two decades after its release, the Jim Henson Company is ready to go forward with a sequel, "The Power of the Dark Crystal."

David Odell and Annette Duffy are writing the script, and according to Variety, no director has been hired to helm the sequel. Odell wrote the screenplay for the original film.

"The Power of the Dark Crystal" takes place many years down the road from the first film, with "The Dark Crystal" heroes now ruling as King and Queen.

In a statement to Variety Brian Henson said, "With the Jim Henson Co. celebrating its 50th anniversary, 'The Power of the Dark Crystal' is a wonderful tribute to our legacy of fantasy projects. The original film set a new standard for the genre and broke new ground in visual effects."

Brian Henson, Ralph Kamp and Louise Goodsill will be executive producers, with Lisa Henson and Kristine Belson producing "The Power of the Dark Crystal."

Production will begin later this year with a target release date in early 2007.
