Feb 21, 2006 - Javier Bardem has been confirmed to star in the movie version of Gabriel Garcia Marquez' novel, "Love in the Time of Cholera," for New Line Cinema.
Mike Newell ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") will direct the film with production expected to begin later this year in Central and South America.
Ron Harwood ("The Pianist") adapted the screenplay which centers around a man who spends 50 years accumulating wealth and building a solid reputation in order to win back a woman he lost in his youth to a richer suitor.
New Line acquired the rights to Marquez' novel in November 2004 and quickly hired Harwood to write the script. Marquez had turned down all previous offers from Hollywood but sold the rights to producer Scott Steindorff who in turn took the project to New Line.
Bardem was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in "The Sea Inside." He recently completed work on "Goya's Ghost" for writer/director Milos Forman.
