In the press release announcing Harwood's involvement, the screenwriter was quoted as saying: "I will not say anything about my approach to this screenplay except to say what I always say: 'I will do my utmost to be true to truth.'"
Co-Presidents of Production for DreamWorks Studios Mark Sourian and Holly Bario stated, "It is so gratifying for all of us at DreamWorks Studios to have a writer as respected and honored as Ronald Harwood to write the screenplay for our Martin Luther King film. His record of achievements makes him particularly suited to portraying this deeply personal story against the background of such a turbulent time."
There's no word yet on who will direct or star in the still-untitled film.
Harwood's screenwriting career spans near 50 years and includes The Dresser, The Statement, Being Julia, and Love in the Time of Cholera. In addition to winning the best adapted screenplay Oscar for The Pianist in 2002, Harwood was nominated in 1983 for adapting The Dresser and in 2007 for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
