Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett-Smith Return for the Sequel

By Rebecca Murray, About.com

Sep 14, 2005 - DreamWorks Animation is looking to continue the success of their animated animal movie, "Madagascar," with "Madagascar 2." CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg announced the studio will produce a sequel to the hit animated film which to date has earned an incredible $500+ million worldwide.

"Madagascar" now stands as DreamWorks' most successful original film, making the idea of going ahead with a sequel pretty much a no-brainer. It's also one of the top five computer-animated movies of all time.

"Madagascar" stars Ben Stiller, Chris Rock and Jada Pinkett Smith, will return for "Madagascar 2," which will be produced again by Mireille Soria and co-directed by Eric Darnell and Tom McGrath.

In a statement issued by DreamWorks announcing "Madagascar 2," Katzenberg said, "As a result of its tremendous box office success, the potential to tell a new chapter in its story and the popularity of the film's characters, we are excited to announce that we are making 'Madagascar' our second company franchise -- along with 'Shrek.' We will release a theatrical sequel in 2008."

DreamWorks also announced they'll be giving the penguins of "Madagascar" - those little black and white guys who stole the show in the first film - their own movie. DreamWorks will release a direct-to-video penguins movie in 2009.
