"Land of the Dead" on DVD

© Universal Studios Home Entertainment

The Bottom Line

George A Romero and zombies go together like bread and butter. Romero pretty much invented the zombie movie genre and even though "Land of the Dead" is probably the lessor of all of his zombie films, it's still entertaining and offers up enough creepy thrills to make spending an evening with the occupants of Romero's latest (and last?) zombie film definitely worthwhile.

Guide Review - "Land of the Dead" Unrated Director's Cut DVD Review

Does the premise even really matter? Aren't most Romero fans and zombie freaks really interested in watching "Land of the Dead" for the cool - and disgustingly realistic - effects? Because the answer to those questions is, in order, no and yes, the fact the plot for "Land of the Dead" is really kind of boring doesn't make all that much difference.

For those of you who feel it's important to know what you're getting into, here's the synopsis:

The zombies are continuing to evolve in "Land of the Dead," starring Simon Baker, John Leguizamo and Dennis Hopper. This time around Romero's flesheaters have learned to communicate and more importantly, to plot and plan.

Meanwhile the living have been divided into class systems, not so dissimilar from modern times. The wealthy live in the best housing facility on the planet - Fiddler's Green. Those without a lot of money live in the city that surrounds Fiddler's Green, safely barricaded from the zombies who live outside the city walls. Things come to a head when the mercenaries who make runs outside the walls into the land of the dead have a falling out with their boss. While one wants to blow up Fiddler's Green, the other just wants to help out all the innocent people who aren't fortunate enough to live within the high-class tower's walls.
