Directed by Francois Girard ("The Red Violin"), "Silk" follows Herve Joncour (Pitt), a 19th Century French silkworm merchant who goes to Japan and becomes involved in a forbidden romance with a mysterious and sensual woman.
Girard and Michael Golding adapted "Silk" from the best selling novel by Alessandro Baricco. Niv Fichman, Nadine Luque, Domenico Procacci, and Sonoko Sakai are producing the film which is expected to be shot in Japan and Italy late February through May 2006.
In a statement issued by Picturehouse director Girard said, "Alessandro Bariccos book is perfect movie material. It offers both the intimacy of a gripping emotional tale and the epic quality of a journey to the end of the world.
