The Bottom Line

While Will Ferrell isn't at the top of his game in this family friendly soccer comedy, "Kicking and Screaming" will definitely entertain the younger crowd. Adults may get a little tired of a plot that seems to circle around without really going anywhere, while kids will get a kick (couldn't resist the pun) out of the soccer action.

Guide Review - "Kicking and Screaming" DVD Review

Will Ferrell stars as Phil Weston, a dad - and all around good guy - who gets roped into coaching his son's team when the real coach fails to show up. This wouldn't be so bad if his team wasn't soccer's equivalent of baseball's Bad News Bears and if he didn't grow up under the shadow of a father (played by Robert Duvall) who won at everything and who just happens to have a son playing in the same soccer league. Mike Ditka co-stars as Phil's next door neighbor who has his own grudge to settle with Phil's domineering dad.

The soccer action's great, Ferrell is engaging enough to get a few laughs out of the adult audience, and the kids who are part of Phil's onscreen soccer team are terrific young actors.

"Kicking and Screaming" is light, fluffy, fun family fare. Perfect for those nights when you want to disengage your brain and kick it on the couch with your kids.
