Guide Review - "Jersey Girl" DVD Review
Ben Affleck stars as Ollie Trinke, a music publicist whose life plunges into a downward spiral when his young bride (Jennifer Lopez, in a very, very brief appearance) passes away while giving birth to their daughter. Ollie, having a very tough time dealing with this incredible loss, has a breakdown at work, loses his job, and moves in with his dad in Jersey.Enter Maya (Liv Tyler). Maya's a smart, beautiful, straight-talking video store clerk who befriends Ollie and his daughter Gertie (played by newcomer Raquel Castro). Maya's companionship moves from just good friends to something a little stronger as she helps Ollie regain control of his life.
The "Jersey Girl" DVD has a good selection of bonus features, though the largest segment is more about Kevin Smith than the movie. Smith's included a few "Roadside Attractions" featurettes he made for "The Tonight Show," and only one has anything to do with "Jersey Girl." If you're a big Smith fan and you missed "Roadside Attractions" on TV, then the 5 segments he's included should make you chuckle. If you're more interested in "Jersey Girl" because of Affleck, J-Lo, or Liv Tyler, then "Roadside Attractions" can be skipped without feeling you're missing out on anything.
The Kevin Smith/Ben Affleck feature commentary track is, without a doubt, one of the most honest, no holds barred tracks included on any DVD. Friends offscreen, Affleck and Smith really open and let loose on subjects surrounding and related to their films.
