John Hensley had lots of reasons to be all smiles at the Los Angeles Premiere of "The Polar Express." He's on a hit TV series, the critically acclaimed "nip/tuck," and he's been busy working on an independent film for first-time director Theo Avgerinos.

INTERVIEW WITH JOHN HENSLEY:

Did you ever in your wildest dreams believe “nip/tuck” would catch on the way it has?
I’ll tell you, I knew when I read the pilot that I personally thought it was good. I knew that it was something that would be a wonderful opportunity for me to be involved with. But as far as how it seems to have been received, no. I could be wrong but I don’t think you can sort of anticipate or predict anything like that because you just never know. You just never know.

And you’ve just finished working on a new movie, haven't you?
Yes, I just actually wrapped on a movie called “50 Pills.” It’s an independent film that I did with a group of guys. It’s a fun movie. It’s kind of a dark comedy, for lack of a better word.

What makes it a dark comedy?
It’s primarily about this kid, Darren Giles, who is played by this actor, Lou Taylor Pucci. He plays this kid from North Carolina who moves to Manhattan to start college, where he meets me – his roommate – who sort of immediately gets him involved in a slightly off world that he may not want to be a part of.

What grabbed you about the role?
Honestly, it was the script. It was a character that was a real departure from anything I’ve done on “nip/tuck.” I really saw it as an opportunity to jump in and just honestly have fun.

Is that what you’re looking for? Something that’s a total departure from your role on “nip/tuck?”
Yeah. I think any time as an actor, regardless of what you do as a living, I think any time you’re given the opportunity to explore something new about what you do, then take it. And that was really what this was. I really clicked well with the writer and director and producers of this thing. It was just a blast from start to finish.

Does the size of the production play a part in your decision? Do you care whether it’s a big studio project or an independent film?
You know, honestly, I don’t. Whether it’s an independent film or a studio film, if it looks like something you want to be associated with, if it looks like there’s good people doing it, and at the end of the day, if it looks like something you can have fun with, then do it.

How long was the shoot?
We actually shot for about 3 ½ weeks [in Los Angeles]. There’s about a week of stuff… We have to grab all the exteriors in New York so I think we’re going to go do that in December maybe.
