With two seasons as Mike Delfino on the hit TV series Desperate Housewives under his belt, James Denton was ready for something a little different. The actor decided to spend his 2006 summer hiatus in Santa Fe, New Mexico, working on a comedy with comedian/actor Chris Kattan.

James Denton on His Upcoming Movie: “I did a movie, a really - I hope - hysterical Western comedy with Chris Kattan from Saturday Night Live. We’re partners in the Old West. It was the most fun I’ve ever had in my life, so I was happy to be working. It’s called Wanted: Undead or Alive. It’s a zombie Western. Chris and I are the leads, I guess. We’re in every scene of the movie.”

Denton isn’t playing one of the undead. “No, I’m an old cowboy and he’s sort of a hapless loser. We end up in an old jail cell together and we break out and we don’t know each other. We sort of become partners, because we have to, because an Indian has put a curse on this old West town and people are becoming zombies at an alarming rate. Chris and I are on the run so we’re leaning on each other because we’re the only people that aren’t zombies. It’s hysterical. Whether anybody will see it or not, I don't know. He’s funny as hell, I’ll tell you that.”

It’s Definitely a Reluctant Partnership: “He takes to me pretty quickly and I sort of roll my eyes and tolerate him through the movie. But by the end, we become pals. It’s a really sweet movie. It’s very, very funny. I hope it gets distributed. It’s an indie, so we’ll see.”

What’s More Difficult – Gunslinging or Getting Laughs?: “Well, with Chris Kattan, getting the laughs is easy because he makes everybody funny. I certainly am the straight man. We’re Martin and Lewis. It’s obvious who’s Lewis. But gunslinging is easy for me. I’m a redneck. I’m a gun guy, card-carrying NRA member, so riding horses and shooting people was a fun way to spend the summer.”

How big is his personal gun collection? “I grew up in the South so I inherited some from my dad. We’re very responsible gun owners. My dad was a collector so there are no automatic weapons. They’re all hunting guns, old shotguns. I’ve got a .410 over and under. It’s a little bird-hunting gun my dad gave me when I was a kid. I don’t hunt anymore because I don’t live in the South. I wouldn’t hunt in California, but it’s more about family tradition. They sit in a safe, a gun safe in my garage and nobody ever sees them.”

The Third Season of Desperate Housewives: Will hunky actor James Denton return for the third season of Desperate Housewives? As you may remember at the end of season two, Denton’s character was hit by a car driven by dentist – and apparent psycho – Orson (Kyle MacLachlan). Denton didn’t reveal whether he’ll survive the hit and run but did say his current work has him lying flat on his back still in a coma. “As long as the heart monitor has a blip, I’m happy.”

Will every season end with a threat on his character’s life? Denton joked, “As long as they can afford it. No, I hope so. It’s kind of cool to be part of the cliffhanger two years in a row. I’m glad that they think enough of Delfino to make that the cliffhanger. I’ll let you know when I come out of the coma. See if I survive this one…”

The Men of Wisteria Lane: “I think Doug Savant is certainly pivotal. I’m glad that Delfino is sort of maintaining a higher profile, but I think Doug Savant and Ricardo Chavira too. I’m sort of on my Emmy write-in campaign. I’m still disappointed that Doug didn’t get nominated. There’s nobody on television in a supporting role better than Doug Savant and I hope someday that people figure it out.”

Season Two Took a Bashing: Denton says he did pay attention to the hubbub over the second season of the series. “Oh sure. I think you have to. It’s like reviews. If you’re going to believe the good ones, you gotta believe the bad ones. So when people love the show and go on and on about it, if you’re going to listen to that, when they don’t like it, you should also respond. I think Marc has. I think some of the criticisms were very valid; I think some weren’t. I think the show was a hell of a lot better than people gave it credit for, but at the same time, there were some missteps.

I think this year it’s going to be very similar to the first season. I think people that liked the first season better will be thrilled with season three. There’s a very dark mystery that [involves] a number of families that carries the year. The cast is smaller again. Families are more interconnected and all the things that people were unhappy with, I think, have been corrected. I hope people are happy.”

****Spoiler Alert****

If you don't want to know what's going to happen on the third season of Desperate Housewives, read no further.

They wouldn’t really kill off Mike Delfino, would they? He’s too important to the plot. “Looks like I’m going to be around for a while. Mike’s pretty involved in the main mystery this year. It’s just a matter of when they’re going to let me come out of the coma.”
