Sally Kellerman Talks About Boynton Beach Club

From Fred Topel, for About.com

Sally Kellerman plays Sandy, a club member who sets her sights on the newest boy, Jack (Len Cariou), in the romantic comedy Boynton Beach Club. She’s a bit bold and aggressive, even seduces the recent widower with a bravura nude scene. You may also see Kellerman play 'herself' in the first episode of The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman, Laura Kightlinger’s new series on IFC.

What do you think of this idea of movies for grown-ups? You’re not hurting for work are you?
"It’s always good to have a job but this, having this particular job, it’s so delightful to see how it’s turned out. Everybody is so great in this film and the audiences love it."

Does there need to be a designation of older movies?
"I don't know about that. I think what she meant by that is adults, as opposed to I have 17-year-old twins and I’ve watched them grow up and I know what they watch and it isn’t really- - every now and then, like I loved Shrek when they were younger, there were some great animation movies and things like that I loved. I loved a lot of those things but at a teenage level it’s just not the same and making movies, as she said, for 15-25 is great and some of them are really wonderful but there haven’t been enough stories is what I think is - this kind of story and emotion, laughs. It touches people."

Do you have a community like the Boynton Beach Club?
"No, I don’t belong to a retirement community."

But like an actors group?
"No. I was in group therapy for years but it wasn’t the same thing. It was more about growing."

How do you feel to get applause for your nude scene?
"Very grateful."

How did you work up the courage to do that?
"Well, you know, it was in the script from the beginning and I thought that was a lovely scene about friendship and about helping each other, helping one another. At any age, getting to know somebody sexually and everything… I’m becoming a professional drop your shirt, from MASH on down the line, but you just gotta hold your breath and pretend you’re not there."

Do you do a timeline comparison from then to now?
"No, absolutely not."

How do you keep in such great shape?
"Well, I’m lucky. It must be genetic but thank you. I work out, I go to pilates, I walk and I eat everything I can get my hands on. So I’m just lucky."

Are you in one episode of Jackie Woodman or will you recur?
"I love Laura. She’s very inventive and wonderful. She said she’s going to write me something else."

Is that the real Sally Kellerman on that show?
"No. Definitely not."

Ever encounter a cult like that in Hollywood?
"They exist but no, I’ve never been part of one."
