Toni Collette on Her Attraction to "In Her Shoes:" Asked if it was her character's transformation that drew her to this particular project, Collette said it definitely was. "Yeah, it did actually. I think the most interesting thing about any story is when the character is confronted and goes through some kind of change. Being stagnant in life or at work is not too good. And I think its not just my character, its all three of us. Were kind of facing a dark past and coming to a turning point. Its very emotionally engaging and its told in a very real subtle way."
On Her Character Balancing a Job and Having a Life Outside of Work: "I dont think that Rose does choose between work and a life, actually. I think that what she chooses to do is to let go of the responsibility she feels for everybody else in her life and start taking care of herself. And leaving her job is kind of a byproduct of that."
Toni Collette on Selling This Movie to Men: "I think probably a) Cameron Diaz (laughing). I mean, its told by female characters but its about human issues, you know? We all come from family. We all have those relationships that form you and shape you, whether you want to deny it or rejoice in it. It's, you know, its genderless really."
Toni Collette on Working with Director Curtis Hanson: "Hes the best ever, I have to say. For me, I could work with him for the rest of my life and be happy. I think hes just such a gentle, gracious person. He listens and hes so detailed and very trusting. Hes very special."
Toni Collette on What She Looks for in Scripts: "Some truth. Its that simple, I guess. A story that I can relate to and that moves me and a character that challenges me. This was pretty much the best job Ive ever had. All of the elements worked. Curtis Hanson is brilliant, [and] obviously it's an amazing cast. And just the experience of making it was so enjoyable... I walked away from it with some good friends, which is rare."
