Hostel DVD Review (Unrated)

"Hostel" on DVD

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

The Bottom Line

Writer/director Eli Roth follows up his surprise hit Cabin Fever with Hostel, a brutal and twisted horror film with just enough blood, guts, sex and humor to satisfy contemporary horror fans. Fans of Cabin Fever shouldn't be disappointed by Roth's second film, which is just as out there as his rookie effort.

  • Kill the Car: Check out the car-smashing scene from different angles

  • DVD Release Date: April 18, 2006

Guide Review - Hostel DVD Review (Unrated)

Hostel follows two horny American boys (played by Jay Hernandez and Derek Richardson) traveling around Europe, hooking up with women and basically enjoying life on the road. Everything's great - the sex, the drugs, making friends with random strangers - until they find themselves caught up in a sick murder-for-profit business where businessman pay to kill innocent victims.

The DVD Bonus Features

The three-part Making Of featurette is in a lot of ways much more entertaining than the film itself. Writer/director Eli Roth's born to be in front of a camera, or so it seems by how at ease he is in this behind the scenes footage.

If watching kids smash up a car is your idea of fun, then check out the multi-angle interactive Kill the Car featurette. If you're just not that into violence against vehicles, you can skip it and not feel like you've been deprived of a valuable viewing experience.

As for the four commentary tracks, I'll have to admit to fast-forwarding my way through all but the one with Roth, executive producer Quentin Tarantino, and producers Boaz Yakin & Scott Spiegel. That's the one must-listen-to track on the DVD.
