Was you character in "A Home at the End of the World" bisexual?
Bobby? No. He's not aware enough of sexuality. I mean, he is probably sexual or asexual. He's not sexual. I mean, he's just a lover. So if Jonathan dies, Bobby could move back to New York and if he met a girl who rocked his world, he'd be with her. And if he met a boy who rocked his world, he'd be with him. Again, you can call that bisexual, of course, but Bobby wouldn't even know that. If you said to him, “You're bisexual,” he'd think you were talking about purchasing sex. It's so not in the realms of thinking at the forefront of your head. He just exists.

What are you working on now?
I just finished “Ask the Dust.” It's brilliant. It's great.

Who’s that with?
It's with Robert Towne. Towne's has been trying to get it made for 30 years.

Who are you playing?
A character called Arturo Bandini. He's an Italian-American writer in 1930's L.A. It's a beautiful book.

Are you taking a break now?
No. I start work in two weeks on a Terrence Malick film.

What are your impressions of Malick?
Oh, he's an incredible man. He must be something of enigma for you. He's very, very shy. He's highly intelligent. He's very gentle with his intelligence, like not overtly mouthy. Just a very gentle spirit. Again, as intelligent as he is, and this is his intelligence as a person, he's very childlike and sees details everywhere. “Oh, that's strange.” Just gorgeous.

Who do you play in his film?
John Smith. It's called “The New World.” It's the story of the English settlement on the east coast of the early 1600's. It's cool, man. Terry wrote the script and it's beautiful.

What do you think when you see some of your first few movies?
I mean, I don't really look at them. I'll probably some day maybe have a Colin Farrell self-masturbation session. No. I don't really look at them. I'm too busy. I know which ones I enjoyed doing in my life and which ones I didn't.
