Mar 24, 2007 - Emile Hirsh, the star of Alpha Dog and Lords of Dogtown, has a need for Speed...Speed Racer that is. Hirsch is the first actor to sign on to the new live-action Speed Racer movie from the Wachowski Brothers (the guys behind the Matrix movies).
Hirsch will play the lead role of Speed, a racer who loves to drive. Production is expected to begin this summer with Warner Bros Pictures eyeing a May 9, 2008 release date.
Larry and Andy Wachowski are writing and directing the film. Joel Silver and Silver Pictures are producing Speed Racer. In a press release announcing Hirsch's involvement, Jeff Robinov, President of Production at Warner Bros, said, “Emile Hirsch is one of today’s fastest-rising young stars, which makes him the perfect choice to take the wheel of Speed’s Mach 5. He continues to showcase his talents in a variety of challenging roles and we are thrilled to have him in the title role of Speed Racer.”
