Aug 4, 2006 - Universal Pictures and Guillermo del Toro have hammered out the details and now it looks like Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is definitely a go. Filming is expected to begin in April 2007 in Budapest and London, with the studio aiming for a release in the summer of 2008.
Guillermo del Toro wrote the script and will be directing the sequel to his 2004 film. del Toro's script is based on a screen story by del Toro and Mike Mignola, which is based on the comic created by Mignola.
Ron Perlman will be back as the humanoid creature who was born in Hell but raised on Earth to battle evil. Selma Blair is also confirmed to return as Liz Sherman, a pyrokinetic and close associate/love interest of Hellboy's.
According to the press release announcing the deal, the second Hellboy movie will include both new and old characters and, of course, Hellboy will be forced to face down a deadly threat against humanity.
Universal Pictures Chairman Marc Shmuger and Co-Chairman David Linde stated in the press release, "All of us at Universal are delighted to be part of the continuing adventures of Hellboy and his universe, as there are few properties which offer this unique blend of action, humor and character-based spectacle. We are incredibly excited by the potential of this film and even more so to be working with Guillermo del Toro, whose vision for this film has ignited the fanboy imagination in all of us."
Lawrence Gordon, Lloyd Levin and Mike Richardson are producing the film with Chris Kenny executive producing.
