The Bottom Line

Writer/director Frank E Flowers' feature film debut, Haven, is an ambitious movie to say the least. Flowers wrote about what he knows - the Cayman Islands - and the fact that he's so connected to the locale really helps sell the story. Plus signing up a cast that includes Bill Paxton, Anthony Mackie, and Orlando Bloom really helps make Haven a cut above the usual thriller.
Pros
  • Orlando Bloom's never been better
  • Great performances from Anthony Mackie and Zoe Saldana
  • Interesting plot that keeps you guessing
Cons
  • Only one bonus feature

Description

  • Short behind the scenes featurette
  • Rated R for language, drug use, sexual content and some violence
  • DVD Release Date: December 26, 2006

Guide Review - "Haven" DVD Review

You almost need a scorecard to keep track of the intricacies of the plot of Haven, the first feature film to be shot entirely in the Cayman Islands. Orlando Bloom stars as Shy, a basically decent young man who falls in love with Andrea (Zoe Saldana), the daughter of one of the island's most influential families and someone way out of his league - both socially and economically.

One night of passion between the two sets off shockwaves in their island community. Andrea's brother, Hammer (played by Anthony Mackie), hates Shy, and the fact that Shy took his sister's virginity drives Hammer crazy with the need for vengeance.

A second storyline follows Carl Ridley (Paxton), a shady American businessman who flees to the islands to avoid being arrested. Carl drags his teenaged daughter Pippa (Agnes Bruckner) along, forcing her to leave behind her high school friends. Pippa's not happy about this and takes up with one of the locals (Victor Rasuk).

There are drug deals, failed money laundering schemes, sex, and secrets a plenty in the entertaining thriller, Haven, just don't look for much in the way of extra features. Unfortunately, there's only one short 'Making Of' featurette and that's it.
