The Bottom Line

This Friday the 13th isn't a remake of the first film even though it shares the same name as the original. Instead, it's best to view this 2009 film as more of a reboot of the entire franchise. Good acting, a decent storyline, and a high body count make this new addition to the popular series a notch above 90% of its predecessors.

Guide Review - 'Friday the 13th' Killer Cut Special Edition Blu-ray Review

The Story

Jason's back and he's mad as hell in this entertaining addition to the Friday the 13th franchise. After a brief recap of the events which led to Jason's murderous ways, a new batch of good-looking victims shows up to spend some leisure time in the vicinity of Camp Crystal Lake. But, as we know, they're not alone...

The Bonus Features

The Killer Cut Blu-ray release contains the original theatrical cut of the film, a digital copy, and a new extended version with 11 extra minutes of footage. And in lieu of a standard commentary track, viewers are treated to a 'PIP with Trivia Track' with interviews and insider info on the making of the film, something viewers also get when they check out the 'Rebirth of Jason Voorhees' featurette. That extra feature digs into how they crafted Jason's backstory and reinvigorated the character.

The Friday the 13th Killer Cut Special Edition Blu-ray also includes three deleted scenes worth checking out and 'Hacking Back/Slashing Forward,' an interesting piece that looks back on, and pays homage to, the original film that spawned the franchise. And for those into blood, guts and gore, 'The Best 7 Kills' is a lengthy featurette on Jason's handiwork in the film that looks at how the effects were pulled off.

As for the Blu-ray specifics, it's not the most dynamic Blu-ray experience ever but the film does look great in the format. Much of the movie is dark, and even those scenes are crisp and sharp on the Blu-ray release.
