April 25, 2006 - Brendan Fraser is set to star in New Line Cinema and Walden Media's updated version of the classic Jules Verne story, Journey to the Center of the Earth, to be directed by Eric Brevig.
This new take on Verne's tale is set in contemporary times and follows teenager Alex Lindenbock who, along with his scientist father, discovers a message hidden in an ancient artifact. According to a press release issued by New Line Cinema, the two are determined to put the pieces of the riddle together and set off on an adventure that brings them face to face with never-before-seen worlds and creatures.
Brevig makes his directorial debut with Journey to the Center of the Earth. Brevig won a Special Achievement Academy Award for his visual effects work in Total Recall and was the visual effects supervisor on films such as The Village, The Island and Peter Pan.
Journey to the Center of the Earth will be the first film to be produced especially for the 3-D digital cinema format. The film will feature fully digital photo-real environments and will be shot in high-definition 3-D, using the cameras developed for Walden Media and James Cameron's Ghosts of the Abyss and Aliens of the Deep films.
Filming on Journey to the Center of the Earth is expected to begin in June 2006 in Montreal.
