Guide Review - "Sling Blade" 10th Anniversary DVD Review
Karl [Thornton] comes back to the small town where he grew up and is accepted into the lives of a few of the locals (including a gay shopkeeper played by John Ritter). He befriends a lonely boy (Lucas Black) who's being harrassed by his mom's abusive boyfriend, Doyle (Dwight Yoakam). Despite just wanting to fit in as much as possible and lead a 'normal' life, Karl's role as protector of the young boy sets him up for a fateful confrontation with Doyle.
Thornton won an Academy Award for the adapted screenplay and was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar. "Sling Blade" is still Thornton's finest work, and the entire ensemble cast received much deserved kudos for their work on the film.
