Guide Review - "House of Voices" DVD Review
As the kids leave the bathroom, the water turns itself on. The boy heads back into the bathroom to turn off the water and something about the mirror over a large tub grabs his attention. When he climbs up the porcelain tub to get a better look, he loses his footing, hits his head, and dies.
That chilling opening sequence sets just the right tone for the remainder of the film. The story then picks up with Anna (Virginie Ledoyen), a pregnant young woman who comes to work as a cleaning woman after the children - except one - have left to be adopted out.
As Anna explores the facility, she begins to experience strange things. She hears footsteps when no one else is there and the sounds of children at play. She also is drawn deeper into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of a large number of children brought to the orphanage for treatment.
While "House of Voices" is, for the most part, a well-done thriller, the surprise or 'twist' ending felt somehow wrong to me. After building up a compelling story, "House of Voices" ultimately succumbs to a bizarre plot twist that's a real letdown. Still, the creep factor is high for the majority of the film and there are definitely far worse horror films being released these days.
