The Bottom Line

Writer/director Kevin Willmott does an amazing job of taking American history and turning it on its head in this faux documentary.

Guide Review - "CSA: The Confederate States of America" DVD Review

Willmott's "CSA: The Confederate States of America" looks at an America which thankfully doesn't exist. Told in the style of a British documentary probing America's history, "CSA" asks the question no one really wants to have answered: what if the South had won the Civil War?

Abraham Lincoln was run out of office, America has backed a lot of wrong horses in world affairs, and slaves are not only still legal but their ownership is encouraged - that's the world Willmott brings to life in this terrific satire. With "CSA," Willmott has crafted a highly detailed faux documentary that's one of the most original films of the decade.

The Bonus Features

Skip the commentary track with just the writer/director and listen to the one with Willmott and producer Rick Cowan. The twosome do a good job of explaining specific scenes, how/why different 'events' were included in the film, and how tough it was creating the film on a miniscule budget.
